Born from the Spirit of the Pacific Northwest

Tumbleweed Island is a Seattle ukulele trio that grew out of the West Seattle Ukulele Players Association — a community where the aloha spirit runs deep and the coffee runs deeper. Three friends discovered that Hawaiian warmth and vintage Americana aren't so far apart after all.

We play the music that makes people feel something: the gentle sway of a beachside evening, the bounce of a 1950s dance hall, the bittersweet sweetness of a song your grandparents knew by heart.

Whether you catch us at a West Seattle live music venue, a private event, or a backyard gathering across the Pacific Northwest, we promise to leave the room a little warmer than we found it.

Galen Maynard - baritone ukulele and vocals, Tumbleweed Island West Seattle ukulele trio

Galen Maynard

Baritone Ukulele · Vocals

Galen spent years finding his voice in show choirs, a cappella groups, and bands — but it wasn't until he wandered into West Seattle Ukulele Players in 2024 that he found his instrument. Turns out, all he was missing was four strings.

Paula Walters - tenor ukulele and vocals, Tumbleweed Island West Seattle ukulele trio

Paula Walters

Tenor Ukulele · Vocals

Paula doesn't just play the ukulele — she built one. With decades of musical experience, she brings warmth, depth, and a lifetime of song to every Tumbleweed Island performance. Off stage, she's either crafting something with her hands or making memories with family. Sometimes both.

Mike Herret - bass and vocals, Tumbleweed Island West Seattle ukulele trio

Mike Herret

Bass · Vocals

Mike brings the low end and a lifetime of playing to Tumbleweed Island — a musician equally at home in a variety of groups and genres. When he's not holding down the groove, you'll find him with his hands in the garden.

The Repertoire

Our setlist draws from three distinct but kindred traditions — all of them rooted in joy, community, and music that rewards listening and singing alike.

🌺
Traditional Hawaiian — The gentle melodies and lush harmonies of classic Hawaiian music — IZ, Gabby Pahinui, and the great hapa-haole songbook.
🎷
Swing & Jazz Standards — Lively, toe-tapping arrangements of the Great American Songbook — Django, Louis, Ella, and everything that swings.
🎙️
Vintage Pop Classics — Beloved songs from the 1940s–60s that audiences know and love — perfect for singalongs and summer evenings.

Frequently Asked Questions

Pricing depends on the event type, duration, location, and equipment needs. Every gig is a little different — reach out with the details of your event and we'll put together a quote.

We typically play two 45 minute sets with a short break to rest our fingers in between.

About 30 minutes for our full PA setup. If you need us ready faster, just let us know and we'll make it work.

We do! We just need access to power for our full setup with mics and a PA. We can also do an intimate acoustic set if the occasion calls for it.

We do! Please let us know about your event and we'll see what we can do.

We'd love to play your cocktail hour or rehearsal dinner, but you probably want a get-down-and-boogie band for the main event.

Yes, and honestly it might be our natural habitat.

We're perfect for festivals, community gatherings, and farmers markets across the Seattle area and are always up for a new outdoor venue. Get in touch with the details and we'll see if we're a fit.

Absolutely — if it's on our list, we'll play it. If it's not, we'll smile and say we'll add it to the set list... which means we're adding it to the set list.

We can! Just be aware that our version may bear only a passing resemblance to the original — the same song, charming, but distinctly ukulele-shaped.

Well, we are just a ukulele trio, but our amps do go to 11. Or you could just stand closer, of course.

Hawaiian shirts are strongly encouraged, at least for us. You're free to wear whatever you like.
